Part 6-New Zealand South Island Itinerary-Milford Sound

Day 7 - Te Anau - Milford Sound/Piopiotahi - Queenstown

We left our hostel, YHA Te Anau at around 6.45 am and arrived in Milford Sound 2 hours later. The drive to Milford Sound takes you through winding, slippery roads & also a single lane tunnel. Be sure that the driver is very capable & confident to drive on these roads. However, the views of mini waterfalls cascading around you & the snow capped mountains will make the drive very worth it.

Arriving in Milford Sound feels like stepping into another world, especially when it is a misty & calm day like ours. Fun fact: Milford Sound is also known as Piopiotahi in Maori. Funny name right? :) We have booked our Jucy Cruise online (special discount for Jucy car rental drivers & more discount when bought from bookme.co.nz) & we checked in at the Jucy counter for the 9.15am cruise.

Our ship awaits!

There was a slight drizzle but nothing could spoil our adventure on the cruise! We lined up early to pick the best seats on the ship, by the window. There were complimentary hot coffee & tea on board, thankfully. The captain also narrated the whole journey around Milford Sound. However, the best seats on the ship are definitely on top of the ship, open air seats with full 360 view of hundreds of waterfalls. If you're lucky, you might be able to spot seals & dolphins as well!

My favorite part of the cruise is when the ship got really close to the waterfall & we were soaked! We were standing at the front of the ship & the captain warned us to keep our belongings before we were showered! We laughed our bottoms off, it was outrageously freezing but one of the best experiences of my life! :D Watch the Youtube video below:

The cruise lasted around 1 hour 45 minutes. After lunch & a quick nap in the quiet cafe, we headed back to Queenstown to check into YHA Queenstown Lakeside again. We spent the rest of the day walking around town & buying souvenirs for loved ones back home. Our flight back to Auckland was on 9.35 am on the next day and we were excited to prepare for the Auckland International Marathon! Find out more on the next posts:

Part 5-New Zealand South Island Itinerary Skydive

Day 6 - Queenstown - NZONE Skysdive - Te Anau

A trip to New Zealand will not be truly complete without a skydiving adventure! New Zealand is gorgeous when you explore it by land, but there is a new level of appreciation when you view everything from above. We chose to skydive in Queenstown with NZONE & booked our tickets online. On the day of our jump, we upgraded our jump from 9,000ft to 12,000ft since 9,000ft only gives a few seconds of freefall. A van picked us up from the NZONE outlet on Shotover Street to bring us to the dropzone, which is ~20 minutes away from town.

The weather was a bit cloudy when we reached the dropzone & we were worried that we won't be able to jump if it rains. When they called us in to suit up, there was no turning back! They gave us a quick briefing on what to do/what not to do when you are freefalling. It was hard to concentrate with all the adrenaline rushing through your body, but do not worry, your tandem master will guide you in mid-air. All of the tandem masters have thousands of jumps in experience & I feel extremely safe & assured by them.

Our plane arrived and we were the last ones to board the plane since we were the firsts to jump out of the plane. There are no seats on the plane & you will sit cross-legged on the floor in front of your tandem master while he straps you to him.

Nervous/excited faces before the jump!

While the plane was climbing up to 12,000ft, I tried very hard to enjoy the view of The Remarkables mountain range & Lake Wakatipu below us, I forced myself not to think about jumping out the plane. My husband was the first to jump & it was surreal to watch him disappear into thin air. It was my turn next & I took a deep breath before my tandem master propelled out of the plane.

And we're off!

The freefall was outrageously scary! I couldn't breathe & couldn't scream, couldn't even close my mouth. I was afraid I was going to pass out. It was hard to look at the cameraman, trying to record my every move (and weird faces). We were in freefall for ~1 minute. My tandem master pulled on the parachute & finally I can breathe easily. This is the best time to enjoy the view of Queenstown - you have 360 degrees bird's eye view of paradise. We spotted a field of sheep & my tandem master said sheep has the biggest population in New Zealand, even more than local citizens!

Trying hard to smile & not pass out haha
Amazing view!

"Look Ma, I can fly!" LOL

Thumbs up!

Thankfully I didn't feel dizzy after the jump, only a bit light headed. My husband felt really dizzy & almost threw up, hence we decided to cancel our initial plan to go for the Kawarau Bridge bungee jump. Skydiving in New Zealand is a dream come true for me, it is high on my bucket list. The whole experience felt surreal and we were very proud of ourselves when we managed to accomplish it.

Happy to be back on solid ground!

After the jump, we got back into town & walked around by the lake. We had the most amazing gelato by the lake.

Walking by Lake Wakatipu

Later, we drove down to Te Anau to stay for one night before driving farther down to Milford Sound. It was almost sunset when we reached Te Anau after 2 hours. We paid a quick visit to the bird sanctuary & stocked up on groceries at the local supermarket (Tip: Buy tomato soup & gnocchi for a quick & hot vegetarian dinner). YHA Te Anau hostel has a big & clean kitchen, it was perfect for us to cook our own budget meals there. We retired early to our rooms since we had to wake up before 6.00 am on the next day for the cruise.

Look out for the next post on the magical Milford Sound cruise!

Part 4-New Zealand South Island Itinerary

Day 5 : Twizel - Aoraki/Mt.Cook National Park - Queenstown

Our day started with light rain in the morning, hence we were reluctant to leave the heated Mountain Chalet Motel & head towards Mt. Cook National Park. It was 7 degrees Celcius when we parked at the White Horse Hill campsite to start our hike on the Hooker Valley Track. We chose this track since we were looking for a leisure walk to appreciate views, rather than tiring ourselves too much. This part of the trip is for the nature lovers, this is a MUST DO when you're in Mt. Cook National Park.

The Hooker Valley Track starts here. ETA 1 hour, 35mins

Let's begin!

Gorgeous path among trees

In my previous blog post (read Part 3 here), I mentioned that hiking the Hooker Valley Track is one of my favorite part of this trip. Let me share photos first for you to understand why ;)

Views from the bridge are amazing

Now you know why I can't seem to move on from this experience! :D We felt like we were in another world, we were surrounded by the most serene & gorgeous views. We made the best decision to start our hike early, when it was still cold & drizzling in the morning because the track was practically deserted. We had the whole national park to ourselves most of the time.

The Hooker Valley Track actually consists of 3 suspension bridges. The track will also take you on a boardwalk with spectacular views. After crossing all 3 bridges, at the end of the track, there is an ethereal glacier lake waiting to greet you. You will be simply speechless when you reach the end. It took us around 1.5 hours to reach the lake, since we stopped to take photos a lot of times & also we walked at a leisurely pace.

Picnic tables are available

Gorgeous beyond words

Ice brought to us by another hiker

Remember to bring along packed lunch such as sandwiches or pasta salad with you since there are picnic tables available by the lake. This was one meal I will never ever forget, lunch with a million dollar view that money can't buy. The "rocks" that you see in the photos are actually ice. One hiker approached our table & handed us a huge block of ice.

To get back to the carpark at the White Horse Hill campsite, you will hike the same path as you did on the way to the lake. However, surprisingly, the views were slightly different since it was almost midday & the sun started shining. The heavy clouds were blocking the views of the mountain range in the morning. One our way back, the crowds started coming in & it was slightly more difficult to enjoy the views when you keep on bumping into hikers walking towards the lake.

The view is too breathtaking

Magical views of mountains & river

Once we were safely back in our car, we were happy to rest our tired feet. However, we had along drive ahead of us, to Queenstown. On the way down south, we stumbled upon a fresh fruits stall where all tour buses stop for the tourists to shop. We were delighted to find locally grown golden kiwis, strawberries, apples & so many other types of fruits.

The drive down to Queenstown from Mt. Cook National Park will also take you through Lindis Pass, between Omarama & Cromwell. This is one of the well-known scenic drives in South Island, due to the beautiful hues of yellowish brown grass on the mountain slopes. There is a lookout point along the ~63 km route where you can stop to take photos. We didn't stop though, since we wanted to reach Queenstown before sundown.

It was a 3 hour journey to Queenstown & we checked into YHA Lakeside Queenstown around 4.00 pm. Next on the itinerary is the Queenstown Skyline Gondola & Luge rides. We bought tickets at the counter, NZD 47 for the gondola & two luge rides. We chose 2 rides since the luge has only 2 separate tracks.

Firstly, you will take the gondola up Bob's Peak. You will reach the restaurant & shops area. Then, you need to climb further up the hill to get to the skylift. The skylift takes you the start of the luge track. For first timers, the staff will teach you how to operate the luge - how to go straight/left/right & brake.

After having a blast going down the hill on the luge, we walked around to check out the restaurant and gift shops. Queenstown is a gorgeous city, especially because of the spectacular Remarkables mountain range. You can fully appreciate the city from up here on the hill. There is also Kiwi Haka Maori cultural performances, which we didn't manage to see because of budget/time constraints.

After taking the gondola back down (we saw fluffy sheep on the hillside!), we explored the city center. We stopped by the gift/souvenir shops, boutiques and the Remarkables Sweet Shop (the fudge here is a must buy!). FYI you can find a halal Indian restaurant near the lake. Later we strolled by Lake Wakatipu and walked back towards YHA Lakeside. The lake has crystal clear water, as always, and the ducks are friendly - they will slowly approach you to be friends ;)
